Disability Assistance, Disability Creator and Creative Adaptation

This lesson plan consists of an analysis of how shoes can affect the function of your feet anatomy. With the examples given, understand and compare the difference in both shoes' functions. After you’ve completed the analysis, create your own design or functionality changes in the examples given below.

Knowledge and Understanding

Leg Braces or Ankle-Foot Orthopedics

AFO, or ankle-foot orthosis, is a brace in an L shape worn on the lower part of the leg or the foot. This is a device that can be worn on one foot or both feet, depending on the needs. It can actually be a custom-built design for every individual, it prevents or reduces the range of motion of the lower leg and foot. Ankle-foot orthoses support the ankle joints, keep the joints and muscles in a neutral position, prevent unwanted movements, increase stability, and improve muscle tone.

Foot Binding
A form of body modification, Foot binding was a painful practice that limited the mobility of women and resulted in lifelong disabilities. Beginning at a young age for Han Chinese women of 19th century Imperial China. Women were morphing their feet to the idealized size which was considered to be "sancun" around 3 inches. Foot binding began as an upper-class practice, By the end of the 19th century, majority of the women had their feet bound. This ended in 1911 when the practice of outlawed.

Critical Thinking
Match the following shoes to the correct answer. Circle one.
  • Reduces foot pain and discomfort from a condition or after surgery
  • Assists patients who can't move because of foot surgery, ankle surgery or a disease
  • These assistive devices also give additional support
  • Prevents patients from falling to the ground while wearing this medical device
  • Provides a normal position for the foot and ankle to that the patients can stand
  • Gives support to weak feet and ankles
  • Prevents, controls or limits movement of the foot or lower leg depending on the injury or disability
  • Helps patients get back to normal, efficient pattern
  • Protects the lower leg and foot from possible hits from other surrounding objects while in recovery

Guidelines
Establish the fact that shoes are not only stylish, they serve a practical function and can be turned into something negative or positive. The Negative does not have to look plain and something that looks pretty and colourful does not have to be positive.

Learning Goals and Success Criteria

Understand the difference in the functionality of both shoes

Apply critical thinking skills to evaluate the functional factors

Understand why they correlate

Use creative skills to personalise

-Differentiate the preventative and endangerment

-Observe physical differences

-Analyse why the shoes are able to function the way they do

-Pin pointing the broad similarity of disability

- Providing examples of stigma

- Analysing social dynamics around shoes

- create attachments and designs that communicates their own style and creative freedom

Questions:
What material are both shoes made of?
Why is the AFO preventative?
Why is foot binding endangerment?
Which shoes would you (students) prefer to wear?
How does wearing each shoe affect the user long term?

DESCRIBE
  • What colours do you see?
  • What shapes do you see?
  • What is the size of the shoe?
  • What does it feel like?
ANALYZE
  • How does the shoe evoke feelings, ideas, and images?
  • What does the shoe or certain elements of the shoe remind you of?
INTERPRET
  • What is the message or meaning behind the shoe?
  • What is the purpose of the shoe?
EVALUATE
  • Who should be wearing these shoes?
  • What questions does it raise about the purpose of the shoe?

Activity
Using a pencil, pencil crayon, markers and your creativity, add your own designs or features to either shoe of your choice. Make sure to add notes on each design and function.
